The 2020 Cherokee follows a detailed refresh just one year earlier. Now in its fifth generation, the Jeep Cherokee now sports a streamlined exterior, as well as an abundance of fresh infotainment features like a touchscreen, Apple CarPlayô, Android Autoô, and a newly available turbocharged engine.
The optional 270-horsepower turbocharged 4-cylinder promises thrills on or off the road, as do the available 271-horsepower V6 and the standard 180-horsepower 4-cylinder. Any options pairs smoothly with a nine-speed automatic transmission. The Cherokee offers a steady ride on town roads and open highways, and it’s more than capable as an off-road adventurer. If you want to maximize your terrain-tackling potential, you can opt for the Trailhawk trim with enhanced four-wheel drive and specialized suspension. The Cherokee can also be equipped to tow up to 4,500 pounds.
Even with all that muscle under the hood, the Cherokee provides a pleasant ride with a comfortable interior. The cabin can hold up to five people, with spacious, supportive seating in both rows. The SUV has two complete sets of LATCH sets for securing car seats, and all the anchors and tethers are conveniently located and easy to fasten. The interior materials are all high-quality and stylish, and you can add a personal touch with available features like a sunroof, leather or upgraded cloth material, a heated steering wheel, and other amenities. The Cherokee’s airy interior space extends to the cargo area, which offers 25.8 cubic feet for storage. You can also fold the second row of seats for a total of 54.7 cubic feet.
The Cherokee’s Uconnect infotainment system comes with a touchscreen, and the available tech features include smartphone connectivity, Alpine sound, satellite radio, navigation, push-button start, and more. Available safety systems include adaptive cruise control, parallel and perpendicular park assist, and automatic emergency braking. Rear parking sensors and a rearview camera come standard.
Ever sense its debut in the early 1970s, the Cherokee has blazed new trails in the SUV market. Jeep introduced the Cherokee in 1974 as a reimagining of the luxury four-wheel drive Wagoneer. While its predecessor was considered a station wagon, the Cherokee was among the first modern vehicles billed as a sport utility vehicle. The initial models came with two doors and a spacious cabin, while a four-door model was released in 1977.
The Cherokee added to the Wagoneer’s family appeal with enhanced comfort and more contemporary style, which were even more apparent in its second generation, beginning in 1984. The industry took notice of the Cherokee’s popularity around this time, and other manufacturers introduced their own SUVs into the market. However, the Cherokee handily met its competition with a quality interior and Jeep’s engineering.
Over the following generations, the Cherokee’s design was used as the basis for the roomy Grand Cherokee midsize SUV. The Cherokee was rebranded as the Jeep Liberty in the 2000s, but it returned to its original title in 2014. By this time, Jeep had equipped the compact SUV with advanced technology like satellite radio, navigation, and traction control. The fifth generation surprised Jeep fans with a much sleeker design, although it did sport a grille reminiscent of tradition Jeep styling. True to its reputation, the modern Cherokee still blends everyday comfort with capable performance.
